8 Tracks: Of Hypnotic Music For Traveling With Piezo

Music

Movement, voyage and expedition are pensive actions, circumstances and environments. As a result, the soundtrack to such experiences can become influential, inspirational and emotive by nature.

Piezo is an Italian based producer who spent time here in the United Kingdom, in Bristol to be precise. It was here that he drew upon the influence of dubstep and bassweight during the genre's evolution in the city. Now, back in Milan, the sound has stuck with him in both mind, body and soul. His latest release on Idle Hands is a nod of the head to days gone by and is not dissimilar from that of early Kowton, Peverlist and Shackleton records. We caught up with Luca Mucci as he cites the sounds of expedition.

Iury Lech - Barreras

The thing I love most about this tune is that it sounds like it’ll last forever: masterful use of timing and harmony here, with a clear nod to Harold Budd. Perfect for long trips, of course (by the way, if I’m not wrong this is getting a reissue soon!)

  • Lumigraph - Spaceblunts

I discovered this record criminally late, but it’s quickly become one of my favorite Opal Tapes releases. For some reasons I like to listen to this while on a train. It’s probably because of the very slow 4/4 pattern, which nicely counteracts the speed of the train.

  • Alessandro Cortini - Passatempo (2014)

This is for when you need some energy (or when feeling a bit emotional!). Lovely organic distortion and perfect climax on a simple looping melody, Cortini at his best. Love it while driving.

  • Marco Shuttle - And Then...

Shamanic tune, it puts me in a kind of trance every single time. There is something primitive about the melody, the way it loops, it sounds like a ritual…

  • Chevel - Loop #42 [Stroboscopic Artefacts Salp003 - Sacd006]

Not miles away from the dusty melody of Cortini’s previous example, but this one is a bit more thoughtful and steady. Chevel plays with minimal patterns and always manages to come up with interesting ideas and an interesting sound, with not much effort apparently.

  • Pearson Sound -Raindrops Pt2

I wish this was way longer 🙁 Press play and watch outside the window while high on the sky, above the clouds: you’ll see some little heaven creatures popping up…

  • King Midas Sound / Fennesz - 'Above Water'

Ambient / melodic drone masterpiece from one of my favourite 2015 albums. It really strikes a chord and it’s perfect if you need some deep relaxation during a flight.

  • Neu! - Lieber Honig

Neu! ’s first record is a staple in my ipod during long trips and ‘Lieber Honig’ is definitely not the most popular tune of the album. I don’t know what the lyrics say, it definitely sounds sad, but to me it’s also punk and relaxing at the same time. A heart wrenching lament with a 0-f**ks-given attitude. Definitely a moment of pure bliss and inspiration.
Ah, and this is from 1972 – Sigur Ros didn’t really invent anything, did they?
