8 Tracks: Of Grace Jones With Dimensions Festival

Music

The lineup for this year's edition of Dimension's festival is absolutely bulging with talent, Jeff Mills, Floating Points, Aux 88, Helena Hauff… The list goes on. There is one artist however who has had a career quite unlike any of the others, revered around the world as a legend of her genre, the opening concert will see none other than Grace Jones take to the stage in Pula's 2,000 year old ampitheatre. In celebration of the event we asked 8 other artists playing this year's festival to give us their favourite bit of Grace.

Dimensions Festival takes place from the 30th August – 3rd September, tickets available here

Grace Jones - Feel Up (Extended Version)

AARON L –
“The flutes are borderline Thomas The Tank Engine, but when combined with all those elasticated layers of disco goodness ready to spring at any minute, it becomes a master lesson in building dance floor tension.”

  • Grace Jones - Ive Seen That Face Before (Libertango)

LEO LEAL – “Such a beautiful track from Miss Grace… Love the way she sings, in two lenguajes. The melodies are insane, love the mood! And the vibe of tango in a surrealistic way. She transport me to the golden era in NY. Classic!!”

  • Grace Jones - La Vie En Rose

DIMENSIONS RECORDINGS – “No messing around here, I’m going in with no holds barred! La Vie En Rose is just absolutely epic and beautiful in equal measure. Probably GJ’s most well-known track but I’ve heard a couple of DJs use it to devastating effect. In the right place, at the right time, it’s so intense. I think it highlights the very appeal of GJ too. She’s always had a mysterious ability to link the mainstream and the underground in a genuine way, no matter what she does.”

  • Grace Jones - Warm Leatherette

SADAR BAHAR – “Grace Jones is the Queen of Disco, Original Club Kid and Diva so it was very hard to choose a favourite song. I decided to go with Warm Leatherette – it has been one I play for many years and always get a very good crowd response!! It is very easy to dance to and have a monster groove that I think would move anyone!! Her style and costume creativity is from another world!! Love her!”

  • Grace Jones - Living My Life

KHRUANGBIN – “This song and video encompass so many things we love about Grace Jones. Unapologetically raw, high-energy and timeless””

  • Grace Jones - Unlimited Capacity For Love.

DJ OKAPI – “Living My Life was one of the first records I picked up when I started collecting and the track that stood out for me was ‘Unlimited Capacity for Love’, which found it’s way into some of my first DJ sets. What struck me was the funky, stripped-down groove and the sophistication of the lyrics. Her work has an intellectual and emotional depth that other artists just can’t touch, especially these days. ’Cry Now, Laugh Later’ from the same album is another of my favourites, for the same reasons. I can listen to these songs for hours on repeat and hear something new every time.”

  • Grace Jones - Ill Find My Way To You (Quelli Della Calibro 38)

MR TIES – Here is really early Grace Jones. Together with big maestro, Stelvio Cipriani, directly from the police thriller film, ‘Quelli con la Calibro 38’, where she also does a Little Cameo. Also One of my preffered disco song.”

  • Grace Jones - Im Not Perfect But Im Perfect For You

SOFIE – “It’s such a classic, but the lyrics always hit home for me. So accurate. Plus, the music video features Nile Rodgers, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Timothy Leary… Although it wasn’t an easy choice to pick this one, there’s also footage of her performing this song on Soul Train and it’s really brilliant, too.”
