8 Tracks: Of Desire For Intimacy With Orlando

Music

Released last week on Mr. Mitch's Gobstopper label, Brooklyn-based producer Orlando's (formerly Orlando Volcano) new EP The Tide That Moves Me is an exciting progression on from his debut release on Liminal Sounds last year. Packed full of hyper-melodic synth squiggles and twisting dancehall rhythms, it combines club dynamics with a keen pop sensibility.

Orlando's productions always have a strong core of emotion, and his 8 Tracks selections follow in a similar vein – sonically disparate yet united by deep themes of intimacy, yearning and romance. From Robbie Basho and Lubomyr Melnyk to Konshens and 21 Savage, dig in below.

The Tide That Moves Me is out now on Gobstopper.

Lubomyr Melnyk - Beyond Romance

Lead by a beautiful title, for me, this piece outlines the intricacies of deep love. This music, I one day hope to match in emotional density and wisdom.

  • Lubomyr Melnyk - Beyond Romance

Lead by a beautiful title, for me, this piece outlines the intricacies of deep love. This music, I one day hope to match in emotional density and wisdom.

  • Robbie Basho - Orphan's Lament

A song that outlines feelings of abandonment. If you read a bit further into this song and on a broader spectrum it explores the idea of overcoming isolation and the desire to belong somewhere.

  • Mary Lattimore - Wawa By The Ocean

Two people in love, a song for courtship, testing each others limits. Personally this piece conjures imagery of easy and playful love.

  • 21 Savage - Special

One of 21 Savage’s songs that show his sweeter side. There’s always something endearing about an alpha expressing something emotional and heartfelt.

  • Konshens - Don't Worry

I suppose this is more written from the point of someone who already exists in an intimate relationship but by describing the love he has, induces desire for what he sings about. Just a really great love song.

  • Anna Domino - Land Of My Dreams

A cover of an Aretha Franklin song. Lyrically this song has places that chillingly depict naivety and the willingness to accept far less than your worth when you truly long for romantic intimacy with someone.

  • The Marketts - Borealis

The guitar is a voice in this song and you can fill in the lyrics how ever you want, but I hear a song of old fashioned starlit courtship and romance.

  • Houston Stackhouse - Cool Drink Of Water

Honestly I have no idea about the intended meaning of the lyrics in this song but for me it tells a story of trying to get back to the safety of home after a romantic rejection. The listener always completes the piece so all of my interpretations have been purely personal.
