21 Years Of Bugged Out

Art & Culture

21 is the sum of the first six natural numbers (1+2+3+4+5+6=21), it  is the smallest non-trivial example of a Fibonacci number whose digits are Fibonacci numbers and whose digit sum is also a Fibonacci number and, conveniently enough, it's also just how old Bugged Out! will be turning this year. With plans for a big ol' party set for Studio Spaces on Saturday 10th October, we asked Bugged Out's very own Johnno Burgess to give us a timeline of some of his personal highlights – he also told us who he thinks the King and Queen of Bugged Out are (in case you hadn't worked it out, look up!);

King of Bugged Out

Erol Alkan not only reinvigorated the club when he joined us in 2000 but he’s played for us close to 100 times over the years.

Queen of Bugged Out

Charlotte Hotham joined us as an intern in 2000 and then refused to leave! She now manages the Bugged Out Weekender.

1994

LFO kick-start the first ever Bugged Out which takes place at Sankeys Soap in Manchester.

1995

Daft Punk play a short – unmasked – live set at Sankeys featuring new track Da Funk.

1996

Green Velvet played the club for the first time. His Relief/Cajual tunes soundtracked early Bugged Out’s so it was a real coup for us to finally fly him over.

1997

We sign Austrian Christopher Just’s proto-electro-clash I’m A Disco Dancer to our short lived Slut Trax label.

1998

The Chemical Brothers headline our first huge monthly show at Liverpool’s Nation where we reside for five years.

1999

Despite booking Jeff Mills, Armand Van Helden, Carl Cox and Basement Jaxx our first season in Ibiza bombs.

2000

The first Bugged Out Weekender takes place at Prestatyn’s Pontins. It’s a spiritual success but we lose our shirts financially once again.

2001

Electro-clash changes our lives and Miss Kittin and Tiga become regular fixtures of the club.

2002

We move from London’s Fabric to The End where we hold our longest residency. Sadly Thomas Banglater cancels his appearance on the opening night due to an ear infection.

2003

The Bugged Out Mix compilation series starts with Felix Da Housecat.

2004

Ivan Smagghe mixes the first Suck My Deck compilation and Alter Ego’s Rocker is ubiquitous.

2005

As minimal dominates clubs we go maximal. Though the tune that shines through the lot is Lindstrom’s unique I Feel Space.

2006

Simian Mobile Disco, Boys Noize and Digitalism cause a road-block outside The End as a new noisier neo techno sound is ushered in.

2007

Bugged Out hosts a stage at the inaugural Field Day festival in London which features Duke Dumont in an early slot.

2008

Richie Hawtin headlines our stage Field Day with a visual show that concludes with an acid smiley bouncing across the screen.

2009

The End closes and we go out with a bang with Justice. Some fans started queuing from 6pm to get in.

2010

We throw a party in a car park with Diplo and his Mad Decent crew over the summer. Skream joins in with his La Roux remix changing the game.

2011

Hessle Audio’s Ben UFO and Pearson Sound play Bugged Out at Sankeys and show the way forward.

2012

We reignite the Weekender and move it to Butlins, Bognor Regis. Maya Jane Coles and Inner City are highlights.

2013

Disclosure headline the Bugged Out stage at Field Day. A large chunk of the site tries to fit in our tent.

2014

We mark our 20th with a night of 20 DJs playing their top 5 favourite records.

2015

It’s all about Oct 10th at Studio Spaces baby! See you on the dancefloor for our 21st birthday.

Bugged Out's 21st Birthday takes place at Studio Spaces, London on 10th October – find out more here.
