Louis Theroux’s Scientology Documentary Banned In Ireland

Documentary film maker Louis Theroux's latest film 'My Scientology Movie' looks set to be banned in Ireland as it contravenes blasphemy laws. The film, which is set for release early next month, exposes the inner workings of the religion unconventionally. In a series of auditions, actors play out scenes exhibiting intimidation and violence of Scientology senior officials, revealed by estranged members. Ireland's Defamation Act of 2009 blocks "publication or utterance of blasphemous matter" against any religion is an offence and carries a fine of €25,000. Although there are grounds for appeal on artistic merit, it seems that distributors could be unwilling to challenge the legislation.

Theroux's first theatrical feature was produced by the team behind 'Searching For Sugarman' and 'Man On Wire', and although suffused with his usual humour has led him to fear that his privacy has been invaded after claiming of suspicious activity on both his banking and email accounts. Louis Theroux will be taking part in a live satellite Q&A session as part of an event at London's Rich Mix Cinema next month.
